Let s run through the complete process of network communication between a client and a server Before the actual process of communication can start, the server has to be made ready to receive client requests It should be running on a specific computer and should have a socket that is bound to a specific port number When the server is ready and listening for the client request, the client can try to make a connection To do this, the client tries to contact the server socket on the computer on which the server is running by using the host name or IP address of the computer and the server port number The client should have this information about the server if it wants to connect to the server When a server receives a request for connection, the server may accept the request.

The idea behind running an Access parameter query with Excel is simple. Have the user input the parameters on your spreadsheet, then use automation to run the parameter query in memory and output the results to Excel. In the sample database, you will find a query called MyParameterQuery. A quick look at this query in Design view reveals that this query checks for two parameters: region and business segment (see Figure 9-15).

Let s start with alternating background colors on your group details. To apply alternating background colors, open the TopReps report in Layout view and activate the Property Sheet pane. In the Property Sheet pane, select Detail from the Selection Type drop-down menu. At this point, all the detail in your report should be highlighted. Now select the Format tab and find the Alternate Back Color property. There, you use the drop-down selector to choose the Alternate Row item as demonstrated in Figure 3-38.
